Background of the study
Traditional institutions have long played a significant role in the management and conservation of natural resources. In Boki, customary leadership and indigenous knowledge systems are integral to environmental conservation efforts (Nwanne, 2023). These institutions often enforce community norms and practices that promote sustainable resource use, such as sacred groves and taboo areas that protect biodiversity (Eze, 2024). Amid rapid modernization and environmental degradation, the role of these traditional structures is increasingly recognized as vital for complementing formal conservation policies (Nwanne, 2023). This study examines the mechanisms through which traditional institutions contribute to environmental stewardship, exploring their influence on local practices and community attitudes towards conservation. The integration of indigenous wisdom with contemporary environmental management strategies may offer sustainable pathways for preserving natural resources (Eze, 2024).

Statement of the problem
In Boki Local Government Area, the erosion of traditional values due to modernization poses challenges for environmental conservation. Despite the proven effectiveness of indigenous practices in preserving natural resources, formal environmental policies often overlook the contributions of traditional institutions. This disconnect has resulted in fragmented conservation efforts, undermining the sustainable management of local ecosystems. The study seeks to explore how traditional institutions can be integrated into broader conservation frameworks to enhance environmental stewardship and ensure the preservation of cultural heritage and biodiversity (Nwanne, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the contributions of traditional institutions to environmental conservation.

  2. To identify indigenous practices that promote sustainable resource management.

  3. To propose integration strategies for traditional and formal conservation systems.

Research questions:

  1. What role do traditional institutions play in environmental conservation in Boki?

  2. Which indigenous practices effectively protect natural resources?

  3. How can traditional and modern conservation strategies be integrated?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional institutions significantly contribute to local environmental conservation efforts.

  2. Indigenous practices positively influence sustainable resource management.

  3. Integration of traditional and formal conservation strategies improves overall environmental stewardship.

Significance of the study
This study emphasizes the importance of traditional institutions in enhancing environmental conservation efforts. The findings will provide a framework for integrating indigenous knowledge with modern environmental policies, benefiting local communities, conservation agencies, and policymakers by promoting culturally sensitive and sustainable environmental practices (Eze, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the role of traditional institutions in environmental conservation within Boki Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Traditional Institutions: Indigenous leadership and cultural structures managing communal resources.

  • Environmental Conservation: The protection and management of natural resources.

  • Indigenous Knowledge: Traditional wisdom and practices passed down through generations.
